Violent Night 2 Trailer Brings Back Santa, Mrs. Claus and the Christmas Carnage

I loved the first Violent Night. It had those adult Home Alone vibes, ridiculously over-the-top violence and a surprisingly interesting mythology built around this version of Santa Claus.

David Harbour wasn’t just playing a drunk guy in a Santa suit who suddenly knew how to fight. This Santa had a past. Before the beard, the sleigh and the presents, he was a violent warrior who knew exactly what to do with a giant hammer. The movie gave us just enough of that history to make me want more without burying the entire thing under two hours of explanations.

That mixture was what made the first movie work so well. It could be funny, violent and completely insane, but it still treated Santa like an actual character. Harbour played him as tired, angry and disappointed with what Christmas had become, but there was still some goodness buried under all the booze and blood.

The first trailer for Violent Night 2 looks like the sequel is going right back to that same bloody Christmas well, only this time they’re expanding the world around Santa instead of simply trapping him in another mansion.

Santa is dealing with the consequences of the first movie, and apparently beating an entire group of mercenaries to death was enough to land even him on the naughty list. He has also lost his Christmas magic after forgetting the true meaning of Christmas, which leaves him at a pretty serious disadvantage when another group of criminals comes calling.

Those criminals are led by Jared Harris, who plays a ruthless gangster terrorizing the merchants inside the Silver Bell Mall. Santa finds himself in the middle of the mall community and once again has to protect a group of people who have no idea that the drunken guy wearing red is capable of turning Christmas decorations into murder weapons.

Moving the action to a mall is a smart choice. The first movie already felt like Die Hard smashed together with an R-rated Home Alone. A mall during Christmas gives the sequel an entire building filled with toys, decorations, lights, store displays and cheap seasonal garbage for Santa to use while destroying people.

There should be plenty of creative ways for people to die in there.

The biggest new addition is Kristen Bell as Mrs. Claus. Based on the trailer, she isn’t going to spend the movie sitting at the North Pole baking cookies and wondering when Santa is coming home. Santa eventually needs reinforcements, and Mrs. Claus appears more than ready to step into the fight.

That may be the part of the sequel I’m most interested in.

The first movie gave us pieces of Santa’s history, but we still don’t know much about the world around him. Adding Mrs. Claus gives the filmmakers a natural way to explore more of the mythology, their marriage and exactly what kind of life these two have been living for however many centuries they’ve been together.

Hopefully, they don’t explain every damn detail.

Part of the fun was only getting pieces of Santa’s past and being allowed to fill in some of the blanks ourselves. I want to know more about this version of Santa, but I don’t need a twenty-minute North Pole board meeting explaining the magic behind every candy cane.

David Harbour returns as Santa, with Kristen Bell playing Mrs. Claus and Jared Harris as the gangster taking control of the mall. The supporting cast includes Joe Pantoliano, Daniela Melchior, Andrew Bachelor and AEW wrestler Maxwell Friedman.

Tommy Wirkola is also back to direct after handling the first movie. Pat Casey and Josh Miller return to write the sequel, while 87North producers Kelly McCormick and David Leitch are also back behind the movie. That returning team is important because they already understand the strange balance that made Violent Night work.

The trailer doesn’t look like it’s trying to reinvent the series, and I’m completely fine with that. It looks bigger than the first movie, but it still has the same basic ingredients: David Harbour being miserable, criminals underestimating Santa, ridiculous Christmas violence and a little bit of heart hidden underneath all the blood.

I liked the trailer. It didn’t blow me away, but it gave me enough of what I wanted to see. Harbour still looks great in the role, the mall feels like the perfect new playground, Jared Harris should make a strong villain and Kristen Bell’s Mrs. Claus could end up stealing the movie.

Give me more of the Santa mythology. Give me more insane kills. Give me Mrs. Claus beating the hell out of somebody in the middle of a Christmas display.

I’m ready for another violent night.

Violent Night 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on December 4, 2026.
