Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle Is Joining Man of Tomorrow: The Cobra Kai Kid Survived the DC Reboot

The movie is already in production and will reportedly reintroduce Blue Beetle into the new DCU. That finally answers a question fans have been asking since Blue Beetle arrived in theaters while Warner Bros. was tearing down one DC universe and trying to assemble another one before anybody noticed the instruction manual was missing. Xolo survived.

Not bad for a kid from the Valley.

Maridueña made his DC debut in 2023’s Blue Beetle after becoming a fan favorite as Miguel Diaz on Cobra Kai. His movie introduced Jaime Reyes, a recent college graduate who becomes bonded with an alien scarab that gives him a powerful armored suit and enough problems to make karate rivalries seem relaxing.

Blue Beetle wasn’t a perfect movie, but Xolo wasn’t the problem. He brought humor, heart and genuine likability to Jaime. He didn’t play him like another manufactured superhero waiting to deliver a line that’d look good in a trailer. Jaime felt like a real young man suddenly carrying more power and responsibility than he knew what to do with.

Unfortunately, the movie arrived at one of the worst possible times.

The old DC movie universe was already on its way out, James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU had been announced, and audiences knew another reboot was coming. The actors also couldn’t properly promote the movie because of the Hollywood strikes.

Warner Bros. basically dropped Blue Beetle into theaters, wished it luck and then wandered away like a parent leaving a child off at summer camp.

The movie didn’t make enough money to guarantee a sequel, but Gunn repeatedly made it clear that Xolo’s version of Jaime Reyes still had a future. Now we finally know where that future begins.

Xolo Was Never the Problem

Keeping Maridueña as Blue Beetle was always the right decision.

He gave the character warmth, sincerity and a sense of humor that didn’t feel like it’d been approved by twelve executives during a conference call. He also had natural chemistry with the rest of the Reyes family, which gave Blue Beetle something a lot of superhero movies are missing.

An actual heart.

Jaime’s family wasn’t shoved into the background while he disappeared into a secret basement every night. They knew what was happening, got involved and became part of the story. Sometimes loudly. Very loudly.

That family dynamic helped separate Blue Beetle from the increasingly crowded superhero field. It wasn’t another story about a billionaire brooding in a cave or a genius accidentally creating the exact problem he’d spend the next two hours fighting.

It was about a young man trying to protect his family and vice versa.

Gunn clearly believed there was something worth saving, and for once DC managed to survive a reboot without throwing away one of the best pieces.

What Does Blue Beetle Mean for Man of Tomorrow?

We don’t know how large Xolo’s role will be, and there’s no reason to pretend we do.

Man of Tomorrow will bring David Corenswet back as Superman and Nicholas Hoult back as Lex Luthor. Gunn has described the movie as another chapter in his Superman saga rather than simply calling it Superman 2, because I guess straightforward sequel titles are something Hollywood has decided we’ve outgrown.

Blue Beetle makes a lot of sense in this world.

Jaime is young, inexperienced and still learning how to live with alien technology permanently attached to him. Superman is exactly the kind of hero who could guide someone like that. Lex Luthor is exactly the kind of man who’d look at the scarab and immediately start planning how to steal it, weaponize it and blame Superman when everything exploded.

There’s so much Gunn can do with these characters!

There’s also a risk that Man of Tomorrow could become overcrowded. Superhero movies have spent years stuffing extra characters into every available corner like studios get charged for unused costumes.

Still, Gunn has shown that he knows how to handle an ensemble without turning every character into background furniture. Blue Beetle doesn’t need to take over the movie. He just needs enough room to remind everybody why Xolo deserved another shot.

The Cobra Kai Kid Survived

Blue Beetle didn’t fail because Xolo Maridueña couldn’t carry a superhero movie.

It was released during a studio transition, attached to a cinematic universe audiences already knew was at its end and denied the kind of promotion a major superhero movie usually receives. The movie deserved a better chance, and Xolo absolutely earned one.

He went from Cobra Kai to leading a DC movie, only to watch the entire franchise change around him before the movie had even begun its theatrical run. Now he’s returning alongside Superman in one of the biggest movies on DC Studios’ schedule.

Miguel Diaz survived broken bones, school fights, relationship drama and enough motivational karate speeches to fill six Rocky sequels.

Jaime Reyes survived something even more dangerous.

Warner Bros. mismanagement.

Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 9, 2027.
