The First Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Is Here, and Doctor Doom Just Stopped Stormbreaker With His Fingers

The first official trailer for Avengers: Doomsday has arrived, and this is exactly the kind of moment Cobra Kai Never Lies was created for.

Not another alleged leak recorded through somebody’s coat pocket. Not another casting rumor sourced from a guy whose cousin supposedly delivers lunch to Marvel Studios. This is the real thing, and Marvel didn’t ease us back into the Avengers with a nostalgic group shot and a few harmless jokes.

It gave us a frightened Thor, several generations of Marvel heroes on a collision course and Doctor Doom stopping Stormbreaker with his fingers.

Yes, his fingers.

Thor doesn’t enter this trailer as the loud, overly confident god we’ve come to know, the one who assumes every problem can eventually be solved by hitting it harder. He’s gathering heroes from across different teams and universes because he understands what’s coming, and for perhaps the first time in his very long life, he doesn’t believe they’re powerful enough to stop it. Thor is scared.

He tells the assembled heroes that they aren’t as strong as the original Avengers. That team fought Thanos, and many of them didn’t make it home. Then Thor makes the comparison Marvel clearly wants hanging over the entire movie: he feared Thanos far less than the enemy standing in front of them now.

That’s how you introduce Doctor Doom.

Robert Downey Jr.’s Victor von Doom isn’t presented as another villain waiting for the heroes to finish arguing before revealing a giant beam in the sky. The trailer treats him like an approaching disaster. We only get flashes of Doom, but Marvel understands that showing less can make him feel much larger.

Then Stormbreaker comes flying toward him.

Doom doesn’t dodge it. He doesn’t dramatically catch it with both hands or struggle against its power. He calmly stops the weapon with his magic fingers, as though Thor has mildly interrupted whatever far more important thing he was already doing.

It’s arrogant, effortless and completely insulting.

In other words, it’s pure Doctor Doom.

The trailer also brings together an absolutely ridiculous collection of heroes, including the Avengers, the New Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the returning X-Men. Thor appears to be trying to convince these groups to stop fighting one another long enough to recognize the real threat, although getting superheroes to cooperate before destroying several city blocks has never been one of Marvel’s easier assignments.

Steve Rogers also appears at the end of the trailer, confirming Chris Evans’ return and giving Thor something he may desperately need: someone capable of turning this enormous collection of powerful personalities into an actual team.

Marvel’s official synopsis says heroes from three distinct universes will be placed on a deadly collision course as they face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve encountered before. That’s standard studio language until the trailer puts Doom’s fingers around Stormbreaker and suddenly makes every word of it feel considerably less promotional.

The footage also leans into the history behind this crossover. This isn’t merely the current MCU roster gathering for another mission. Marvel is bringing together characters from the Avengers, Fantastic Four and the Fox-era X-Men films for the kind of collision that once existed only in comic-book splash pages and arguments between fans who should’ve gone to bed hours earlier.

Marvel Studios has spent years trying to rebuild the feeling that an MCU release could become an actual event. Avengers: Doomsday finally looks like one.

There are still questions. A trailer this large can hide just as much as it reveals, and putting dozens of heroes into one movie doesn’t automatically create a good story. Marvel has assembled enormous casts before and occasionally treated character development like luggage that could be placed on the next flight.

But this trailer knows just what the hell it’s doing.

Thor is scared. The heroes are divided. Steve Rogers is back. Multiple Marvel universes are crashing together, and Doctor Doom has been introduced as someone who can dismiss one of the MCU’s most powerful weapons without even using his whole hand.

Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on December 18, 2026. Tickets for Marvel’s newly promoted Infinity Vision premium-format screenings are also going on sale today, five months before the movie arrives.

That still feels completely insane.

After watching this trailer a dozen times now, it also feels like Marvel may be absolutely ready for Dunesday. Doom is coming for you, Paul.
