MARVEL TEASES DAY 1, DAREDEVIL #700, AND A STAR WARS CROSSOVER WITH KEVIN SMITH
By Peter David · October 10, 2026 · Cobra Kai Never Lies
Marvel brought several announcements to New York Comic Con, including a mysterious new initiative, a milestone for the Man Without Fear, and seven new covers for a crossover that's been a long time coming.
Marvel Comics had plenty to talk about at New York Comic Con, with announcements involving everything from the future of its comics line to the 700th issue of Daredevil. There's also a new batch of covers for the upcoming Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles crossover, which brings together two franchises that have shared a publisher for a while now but have never crossed paths quite like this.
Of the three announcements, the Star Wars crossover might have the most intriguing premise, especially with Kevin Smith handling the writing. But before we get into that, Marvel has another mystery brewing, and this one might have implications for the Marvel universe.
WHAT THE HECK IS DAY 1?
Marvel is teasing something called Day 1, currently scheduled for June 2027. The announcement is vague, with an image and an ominous warning suggesting that the future isn't guaranteed for everyone.
Of course, that's opened the door to speculation about what Marvel has planned. One possibility and the one I find least interesting is another relaunch, potentially featuring new first issues and a new starting point for readers. Another theory connects the announcement to Spider-Man's controversial One More Day storyline, which famously erased Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson's marriage.
That second possibility would certainly get people talking on both sides of the issue. One More Day has been a sore spot for Spider-Man readers since 2007, and reversing it would be a significant development. At this point, though, Marvel hasn't confirmed either interpretation, so there's little reason to start celebrating or complaining just yet.

DAREDEVIL IS HEADING TOWARD ISSUE #700
The Man Without Fear is approaching another major milestone, with Daredevil #700 scheduled for March 2027. Stephanie Phillips and Lee Garbett are steering the series toward that anniversary while continuing the mystery surrounding Omen, a threat whose presence has complicated Matt Murdock's life both in and out of costume.
Matt has also taken on a new position teaching at Empire State University, which gives him another set of responsibilities to juggle alongside his usual problems in Hell's Kitchen, as if teachers don't have enough on their plate already.
Before the anniversary arrives, January's Daredevil #11 will introduce Latch, a new adversary who looks set to make things considerably more difficult for Matt. Emilio Laiso will provide guest artwork for that issue, while David Mack has contributed an awesome variant cover for the milestone #700.
Seven hundred issues is a hell of an impressive accomplishment for a character who debuted in 1964, and Marvel is clearly preparing to make the occasion a significant event.

STAR WARS AND MARVEL FINALLY SHARE A UNIVERSE
Now for the announcement that comes with some particularly impressive artwork.
Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles launches in January 2027 as a five-issue limited series written by Kevin Smith and illustrated by David Marquez. The project celebrates the 50th anniversary of Star Wars by bringing George Lucas's galaxy far, far away directly into Marvel's Earth-616 universe.
The setup involves a reality-altering spell that causes the events of A New Hope to unfold on Earth, bringing Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and the rest of the Star Wars universe into contact with Marvel's superheroes. Spider-Man, the Avengers, Darth Vader, and Doctor Doom are among the characters involved, creating opportunities for confrontations and team-ups that previously existed mostly in fan conversations.
Marvel has revealed seven additional variant covers by Kaare Andrews, Rafael Albuquerque, Alex Ross, Ron Lim, Jerry Ordway, Jerome Opeña, and Dan Jurgens. Check them out below!

KEVIN SMITH AND THE WAITING GAME
I love Kevin Smith, and his involvement in this both excites and worries me. He's written some terrific comics over the years, including his Daredevil work, and I like the idea of having Smith and his love of pop culture bring these two universes together.
That said, anyone who's followed Smith's comic book career for long knows that deadlines and Smith aren't good bedfellows. His six-issue Spider-Man/Black Cat: The Evil That Men Do took nearly four years to finish, four years and honestly, I didn't think it was worth the wait. Meanwhile, Daredevil/Bullseye: The Target debuted in 2002 and never made it past the first issue.
DC readers have their own reasons to remember the waiting. Batman: The Widening Gyre was intended to be a twelve-issue story released in two parts, but only the first six issues appeared. The remaining chapters were eventually supposed to arrive under the title Batman: Bellicosity, which has yet to see publication. Even Batman: Cacophony, a three-issue miniseries that Smith did finish, encountered delays along the way.
To his credit, Smith has acknowledged his problems with deadlines, and there's no reason to give him a hard time about something he's already owned up to. His enthusiasm for the characters and the stories he tells is a big part of his appeal, and I'd much rather see him deliver something memorable than rush through a project simply to satisfy a calendar.
Still, five issues is five issues, and we've been through this before. Hopefully Marvel already has the scripts finished and the artwork well underway, with enough issues in the bank to keep everything on schedule. I'd love to see Smith take this premise and run with it, preferably without having to wait several years to find out how it ends.
