Major Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Footage Has Leaked Online

Sony has a pretty serious Spider-Man problem on its hands.

More than four minutes of unreleased Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse footage is circulating online, giving people an unauthorized look at material Sony has so far kept behind closed doors.

And this isn't a fuzzy photograph, a few seconds recorded from across a convention hall or somebody claiming to have seen something they clearly didn't. This is substantial footage.

We have seen the leak ourselves and can confirm that the material circulating online appears legitimate. We will not be posting it, linking to it or spoiling what happens in it.

That's not really the interesting part anyway.

The story is that this much footage from one of Sony's biggest upcoming movies somehow got out in the first place.

THE CINEMACON FOOTAGE APPEARS TO HAVE ESCAPED

Sony brought Beyond the Spider-Verse to CinemaCon on April 13, where filmmakers Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson presented new footage from the long-awaited third movie. Sony and Marvel also released official stills from the film, but the footage itself remained exclusive to the people in the room.

Four months later, that exclusivity appears to be gone.

The material now circulating closely corresponds with the footage publicly described by reporters who attended Sony's CinemaCon presentation. We're deliberately not going any further than that. There's no reason to turn an article about a major leak into a written substitute for watching the leak.

What matters is the scale of it.

This isn't somebody getting a picture of a costume from across a parking lot. It isn't ten seconds of somebody's phone pointed sideways at a monitor. Several minutes of material from an unreleased movie are now out in the wild.

And once something like that gets loose, good luck putting the toothpaste back in the tube.

THIS MOVIE HAS ALREADY HAD ONE HELL OF A WAIT

The timing makes the leak even more significant.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse arrived in 2023 and ended with Miles Morales' story very much unfinished. The original plan was to continue it quickly: Beyond the Spider-Verse was once scheduled for March 2024 before being removed from Sony's calendar and eventually pushed years beyond that original date.

It is now officially scheduled for June 18, 2027.

That means footage from a movie audiences have already been waiting years to see is circulating while we're still roughly ten months away from the thing actually reaching theaters.

That's what makes this different from the normal drip of movie leaks.

The Spider-Verse movies aren't some forgotten franchise Sony is quietly dumping onto a streaming service. Beyond the Spider-Verse is the conclusion to the animated trilogy that began with Into the Spider-Verse, and Sony Pictures Animation itself describes the film as the continuation of Miles Morales' race to get home and reunite his family.

There are a whole lot of people waiting to find out how that story ends.

Now several minutes of a movie Sony has been carefully keeping under wraps are floating around months before Sony was apparently ready to show them to everybody.

THE LEAK JUST CHANGED SONY'S MARKETING PROBLEM

The bigger question now isn't what happens in the footage.

It's what Sony does because the footage exists outside its control.

Studios build marketing campaigns around when audiences see something for the first time. A teaser image here. A poster there. Then the trailer lands and everybody spends the next two days pulling it apart frame by frame.

Sony already gave CinemaCon attendees something the rest of the audience wasn't supposed to have yet. Now at least some of that material is outside the room.

That doesn't mean Sony suddenly has to release it officially. There is currently no announcement from Sony saying an official trailer is being moved up because of the leak.

But whatever marketing calendar Sony had yesterday now has a new complication sitting in the middle of it.

People have seen the footage.

We're among them.

We're also not going to tell you what happens in it.

When Sony decides everybody is supposed to see Beyond the Spider-Verse, then we'll happily tear the official footage apart.

Until then, the story isn't what those four-plus minutes reveal.

The story is that those four-plus minutes got out at all.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is currently scheduled to hit theaters June 18, 2027.
